Terroir – Symbiosis of soil, climate and location

The particularly favourable climatic conditions in the Southern Palatinate region, together with the natural diversity of our land and soils, provide the solid foundation for our wines. Our vineyards stretch in gentle waves along the course of the Rhine lowlands and rise up to meet the steep slopes of the Haardt range of woody hills. The terroir features a very unique geological range of soils consisting of sand, clay, loess, new red sandstone and shell limestone. We undertake a large amount of manual work to maintain and care for our vineyards. This includes: limited first cut, use of the flat arch vine training system, breaking off shoots, defoliating, reducing yields, splitting grapes and the careful harvesting of grapes which are examined several times. We employ natural cultivation methods by fertilising with compost and reseeding. Beneficial organisms are used sparingly and insecticides and herbicides are not used at all.
